A Return To Portage Glacier-2/12/2005

Heavy cornices on Byron Peak

Hoofing it across a thin layer of ice on Portage Lake

Soon, the glacier came into view. It had ovbiously receeded since last year.

Pointy seracs

Kiliak's first glacier!

The ice was criss-crossed with cracks. We tested the thickness of the ice often.

Pounding a hole in the ice to check thickness and to confirm a second, submerged layer of ice that was continuous throughout the lake.

"Screw it, lets just go!!!"

After a hair-raising run across the particularly thin spot, we reached the southern shore without getting wet.
