The ice was criss-crossed with cracks. We tested the thickness of the ice often.
Pounding a hole in the ice to check thickness and to confirm a second, submerged layer of ice that was continuous throughout the lake.

After a hair-raising run across the particularly thin spot, we reached the southern shore without getting wet.
